Divorce
I was suprised when my Professor in Filipino 40 told us that the two remaining countries to have not permit the legalization of divorce are Malta and the Philippines. Both, according to history, have a very strong faith in their religions and firmly believe that two beings, joined by God must never be separated by man.Marriage has been considered a divine and spiritual union of people. Man as a social and emotional animal, had the notion of marriage since the ancient times. Christianity especially Catholism and Protestantism strengthens the sanctity and importance of the holy matrimony. For Christians, a prerequisite for establishing a family is marriage. They say that a happy family is complete, with a Father (who is the breadwinner), the Mother (who takes care of the children) and the children (who gives happiness to the family). My parents never married, they are 22 years living, but with my assesment, we are happy interms of our relationship with each other. This is a strong proof that the ceremonial marriage does not promise a healthy and happy relationships.
The common stereotypes for a happy family are somewhat ideal. There are lots of couples who discover that they do not have the same interests and wave lenghts. They end up as broken families without the proper partitions on their conjugal properties or they just hide the problems from their children. Children end up being stigmatized by society as unproductive, traumatized etc.
Happiness does not have a definitive scale. If one is not happy with his/her relationship, then he/she must have the choice to free him/herself from the union. Divorce is the solution: the cure for rotting relationships, to agonies, to misunderstandins, to unequality. It is also an empowerment to women in a sense that it gives entitlement to their personal happiness and fulfilment. This chauvinistic society dictates to us that the ones who have the right to monopolize other's sexual lives are men. Divorce will be a tool for powerless wives who are being beaten, raped, deprived and worse killed by their husbands.
